Mankato
Fun fact: in January of 1963, a tank that was holding 3 million gallons of soybean oil ruptured and flooded the streets. The oil eventually made its way to the Mississippi River. Do you want to know what happened that spring? 10,000 dead ducks were found in the wetlands nearby. Despite the significant decrease in the population of ducks, Mankato remains the fifth most populous city outside of the Twin Cities. It’s got a small-town feel despite its size. Situated in along the Minnesota River, in 2017 it was named the second-best college town in the United States. For 52 years, Minnesota State University hosted the Minnesota Vikings training camp. Despite the training camp moving to Eagan in 2018, Mankato still lays claim to several notable athletes. The city boasts a rich and dynamic music scene, thanks in part to the Mankato Civic Center. It’s also home to the best Instagrammable nature spots, such as Minneopa Falls and Devils Gulch. And don’t forget to grab your iPhone and take a scroll through the CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour or stop at the eclectic Bellissimo Mural. Whatever your plans, be sure you take a minute to rest and enjoy some grub. How about a picnic? You already know that Food Dudes will deliver to you. (And yes, you can most definitely have a picnic in your hotel room.)
